Training using your maximum heart rate is one of the best ways to set workout zones. Setting your training zones can be best accomplished when you decide which of three anchor points works best for you. An anchor point is a physiological marker that provides a simple yet powerful way to determine training zones. The three anchor points, accompanied by three training tools, follow:

If you attend a Heart Zones Training event or workout with a certified Heart Zones Trainer or coach, they can accurately measure your maximum heart rate anchor point. You can also self-administer the assessment called a field test. Without lab- quality equipment, field testing to determine your training heart rates or watt-output is the best way. If you are a maximum heart rate enthusiast, the workout of the month is to field test your maximum heart rate using the eight different Sub-max tests, including the RPE Field Test. Read the adjacent workout card, score your results and you have an estimate of your maximum heart rate. If you want to be precise (I recommend it), take each of the eight different Sub-Max tests and set your maximum heart rate anchor point. You can read each test by reading this months Sally Edwards' blogs on the front page of our website. Another option is to purchase at the Heart Zones store a packet of each of the different tests plus the maximum heart rate and zones cards. This is a permanent way to keep a copy and the results of your Sub-max tests.

Aha. You now have your maximum heart rate, it is simple to set your training zones. Just find your maximum number on the top of the Red Line column, and under that number, go down vertically to see each of your training zones. Train in different zones on different days to get different training benefits.

This bright colorful new full color chart can adorn the wall of your workout area, health club, indoor cycling studio, or anywhere that you want the message - train in the max zones to be displayed. Larger than life at 24" x 36" in size, you can easily mount on foam core or use tape or pins to easily mount. The chart shows fuels burned, is color coded to match the low (blue) to high (red) intensity of each of the five training zones. This wall chart is printed on a durable paper that offers the water and tear resistant properties of a synthetic. In addition, with acid- free characteristics it offers archival permanence Available now at www.heartzones.com/store.

For the past 20 years, I've wearing a heart rate monitor as a watch. I'm old school. The wrist top watch with time is being replaced by the hand-held cell phone. And so is the heart rate monitor receiver. Cell phones can now serve as body function monitors: a stride sensor (speed and distance monitor), a heart rate monitor and a voice-simulating coach. The shift to the mobile phone is being promoted by Samsung (miCoach), Nokia and Microsoft. Other companies offer add-ons like Kiwok and Alivetech. The miCoach is the first phone with heart rate functionality. Catalyzed by the iPod/Nike collaboration, which will soon become an iPhone/Nike relationship, the heart rate monitor-as-mobile-phone movement is gaining popularity. The Samsung packages of hardware and software will be available in Europe later in April (U.S. not until 2009) and will cost $304-$608, depending on the service plan users select.

Certified Heart Zones Trainer Joy Poulsen fell in love with Dance Dance Revolution the first time she tried it. The experience was so powerful; she sought to have the program brought to her children's physical education classes. Fitness expert Poulsen had two reasons: to get kids active and to popularize physical education curriculum. Poulsen, who owns the personal coaching business Inspire Fitness in Hayward, Calif., is a high-energy trainer. She authored a grant and her children's school was awarded $5,000 to purchase a Playstation 2 game system with the DDR video game, heart rate monitor, pedometers and 26 dance pads.

If you haven't tried Dance Dance Revolution, try it. And then follow Joy's lead. Get a grant for your children's schools. Watch the video Or Read The Story

Fit his entire life, former retired Air Force pilot and WW II veteran, Paul Camerer, 89, wanted to help his neighbors get fit and provide access to workouts for free. The result: he founded the first neighborhood gym in America, the Pinkhouse Garage Gym. Free to anyone who wants to do indoor cycling, the Sacramento-based Pinkhouse Gym is a neighborhood gym with members ranging in age from 30 to more than 80.

The gym opened in 2002. Sally Edwards, one of Camerer's neighbors, author and triathlon pioneer, proposed the duo each ride the 50 new rides in her book co- authored with Sally Reed, The Heart Rate Monitor Workbook - 50 Indoor Heart Zones Cycling Rides.

With her busy travel schedule, Edwards missed one of their Tuesday and Thursday rides, so neighbor Cheryl Summers volunteered to take her place. Summers enjoyed the ride so much she invited her neighbor to bring her wind trainer to the next 5:30 a.m workout in garage gym. The group quickly expanded to six riders, and now more than 20 cyclists have participated.

Camerer's wife, Helen, suggested the Pinkhouse Gym name because it's the same color as their house. The moniker stuck. Edwards, co-founder of Sacramento's Fleet Feet Sports chain, has now decided to sell Pinkhouse gym franchises for the same cost of membership into the Pinkhouse gym, free. It's the first "free" garage gym in America.

Edwards, 30 years younger than Pinkhouse, will market the franchises as a way to help get America Fit. Says Edwards: "We need to help our neighbors get healthy and fit and I know of no better way than to workout in your neighborhood, in a safe environment and for a price that everyone can afford, free."

When visiting Sacramento, you're invited to observe the ride or participate in it at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday or Thursday or at 8 a.m. Sunday. Meet garage gym members and get fit. The address is 5904 Camellia Ave., Sacramento (Near the entrance of River Park).

For more information or to participate in a Pinkhouse Garage Gym ride, call Paul Camerer (916) 452- 7771.
