Jump start your weight loss program with only the minimal amount of daily time spent on a resistance training program according to researcher Erik Kirk, Ph. D. at Southern Illinois University.* Just 11-minutes of weight-lifting time resulted in a chronic increase in energy expenditure which changed both energy expenditure and fat oxidation (burning). The increases in both fat and total calorie burning suggests that with little time investment individuals can get results that can help in the prevention of obesity and risks from a sedentary lifestyle. On the average, participants increased their caloric expenditure by approximately 500 calories (kilojoules) per day with daily, brief, weight training program. *Kirk, F.P., et al. " Minimal Resistance Training Improves Daily Energy Expenditure and Fat Oxidation," Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, May 2009, pp 1122-1129

Quick story about the word "free". There is a big difference between the word "free" and the word "cheap". Researchers recently conducted a study and asked participants this: if you were given a choice of a 1¢ Hershey kiss or a 15¢ fancy chocolate truffle, which would you choose? Answer: 75% choose the truffle over the kiss. Next, they dropped the price point by a penny or just 1¢ offering a "free" Hershey kiss or a 14¢ truffle. Choices changed when offered free. This time 75% took the candy kiss and only 25% took the fancy truffle. So, this month, we are offering you the word free at Heart Zones USA. You get free shipping through August. We are offering you free handling. We are offering you a free heart rate monitor when you buy a $50-$75 bundle of DVDs with a book or a wall chart or some apparel. Take advantage of our free offering this month.

Training hard burns boatloads of calories with a low investment in time but a high commitment to pushing the throttle to the floor. This workout is not designed for the unfit exerciser but for the fit who seeking higher levels of fitness. You are going into Zone 5 Max or Zone 5b for those who subscribe to Threshold Training (read articles on Threshold Training under "Free Resources" on the front page of Heart Zones website. And, whenever you do high intensity or high power workouts, a longer warm-up optimizes your performance so go slow and easy for the first 5-10 minutes.

*Each point is worth one minute in that zone multiplied by the zone number. This measures training load aka training stress.
