The new, big screen TV projection of heart rate data, aka Jumbotron, debuted in Chicago, thanks to Heart Zones Master Trainer Renee Schneidewind, owner of Max Multisport Coaching. "We won the contract to coach the Gatorade G-Feat program using the Heart Zones Training system," explains Renee, a partner in the Heart Zones Official Training Programs business. The program includes 70 employees training in one of six different programs. With husband, Russ Schneidewind, certified Heart Zones Trainer, Renee provides corporate training programs, sprint triathlons to running- only programs. The Jumbotron is used for their Heart Zones Cycling indoor application, which allows individualized workouts using the threshold system.

The two most popular machines for cardiovascular club workouts are the treadmill and the elliptical machines. But which is the better? Answer: There's no difference. One recent study pitted the two against each keeping elevation, resistance, and cadence equal. Each participant went to their maximal effort within 8 to 15 minutes and increased intensity every minute. The test was terminated when any of the 14 study subjects could no longer maintain the increasing effort. Measuring peak heart rate, peak VO2 (oxygen intake) and rating of perceived exertion, researchers found it a draw. There were no significant differences between the two machines. In summary, for the same VO2 and heart rate, study participants felt the same effort whether on an elliptical or treadmill.

It's hard to find a quick fix. Quick diets don't work. Quick workouts don't work. Quick cooking is usually more of a metabolic disaster than a solution. But, is an exception worth boasting about - It works. Try this one "quick fix" options for a week and see the results - then brag about it.

The 33-Second Mind-Body Technique. You can't get much quicker than this. This high- powered energy boost is created and practiced by longtime California fitness guru and professional model Willie McCarty, age 60. His technique: Using a wristwatch with a countdown timer set the alarm to go off in 33 seconds. Or, use a clock with hands to measure the 33- second interval. The activity is to focus for 33 seconds on the present and not lose touch with it. That is, your job is to focus on right now. You can count, breathe quietly, watch the wind blow, or just feel the sensation of the sun on your face, as long as you quiet your mind. Is there magic in 33 seconds? Kind of. Willie discovered we are accustomed to 30- second intervals in TV commercials and sound bytes. He likes to call the technique "attention intervals" because they require all of your focus for success. Afterward, the refreshing feeling of being in the present is the payback. Willie welcomes you to contact him directly for more information, (208) 721- 0979 or by email xerciz@earthlink.net.

Though awareness of the rising problem of obesity is increasing, the attention is not resulting in new policies or better results. The time has come for federal, state, and local governments to step in and coordinate an aggressive action plan to reverse the trend. These efforts need to include reduced marketing of unhealthy foods, low-cost access to exercise, and massive health education. Two federal bills and a grant program are pending: the Workforce Health Improvement Program (WHIP) Act, the Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Bill and the Physical Education for Progress (PEP) Carol M. White Grant Program. If interested, give your support and attention to the solution to the obesity and physical-inactivity crisis.
