It's no wonder you see so many ads on TV for food. Watching commercials really does increase your appetite. A recent study out of the University of Liverpool in the UK showed that obese and overweight children increase their food intake by more than 100% after watching food ads on TV. Children ages 9-11 in three weight categories were shown two types of commercials: ones for toys and one for food. Both ads were followed by a cartoon. Food intake following the food commercials was significantly higher, compared with the toy commercials, with the obese children increasing their consumption by 134%, overweight children by 101%, and normal weight children by 84%. Body weight dictated the children's choice of foods. The obese children consistently chose the highest fat foods-chocolate. The overweight children chose jelly sweets (which have a high sugar content), as well as chocolate. The researchers concluded that TV ads profoundly affect children's eating. The study also suggests a strong connection between weight and susceptibility to over- eating when exposed to food commercials on television. Just as cigarette and alcohol restrictions are placed on TV ads, maybe it's time to do the same for junk food commercials. For further information, contact: Kate Spark kate.spark@liv.ac.uk . |
