Eight months ago my 61-year-old, hard-working, successful brother Chris Edwards died of a massive heart attack. Ironically, it was just 4 weeks after doctors placed 3 metal stents-small tubes that push open the blocked artery after it has been cleared-into one of his coronary arteries.

Chris didn't live long enough for doctors to try what may I hope be a safer, new stent. Still in experimental trials, pharmaceutical company Abbott's positive results could lead to the release of bioabsorbable stents. Current metal stents are permanent fixtures in the vessels. Increasingly, because of the alarming number of post-stent surgery complications and deaths, doctors are concerned that metal stents can create complications should patients require future surgery. Abbott's new stent is a type of plastic that completely absorbs within two and a half years.

Recent studies show that physicians using standard stethoscopes are able to correctly identify five common heart murmurs only 40 percent of the time. Enter the era of MP3 players and a study by Temple University School of Medicine. They found doctors were able to achieve an 80% success rate if they had previously listened to each of five distinct types of heart murmur at least 400 times on an iPod.

"Swimmers are not allowed to wear or use any device or substance to help their speed, pace or buoyancy during a race."

This is the story of one Zoner who was busted for wearing her downloadable heart rate monitor during a USA swimming competition. According to one official, that is reason for a DQ. If you want to know how to get around the rules, then read on...

It's no wonder you see so many ads on TV for food. Watching commercials really does increase your appetite. A recent study out of the University of Liverpool in the UK showed that obese and overweight children increase their food intake by more than 100% after watching food ads on TV. Children ages 9-11 in three weight categories were shown two types of commercials: ones for toys and one for food. Both ads were followed by a cartoon. Food intake following the food commercials was significantly higher, compared with the toy commercials, with the obese children increasing their consumption by 134%, overweight children by 101%, and normal weight children by 84%. Body weight dictated the children's choice of foods. The obese children consistently chose the highest fat foods-chocolate. The overweight children chose jelly sweets (which have a high sugar content), as well as chocolate. The researchers concluded that TV ads profoundly affect children's eating. The study also suggests a strong connection between weight and susceptibility to over- eating when exposed to food commercials on television. Just as cigarette and alcohol restrictions are placed on TV ads, maybe it's time to do the same for junk food commercials.
