It's been documented. If you hangout with fit friends, fit family members and work in a fit-friendly environment, you become fitter. One way to achieve greater levels of fitness is to live where the fit folks live. A new report that lists the cities with the highest levels of fitness, The American Fitness Index, documents the cities where the most fit people live. Do you live nearby? Here's the list:

  1. San Francisco, CA (Bay Area) - 403
  2. Seattle, WA. (Seattle Metro) - 401
  3. Boston, Mass. (Greater Boston) - 370
  4. Washington, D.C. (Washington Metro) - 369
  5. Atlanta, Ga. (Metro Atlanta) - 285
  6. Philadelphia, Pa. (Delaware Valley) - 268
  7. Chicago, Ill. (Chicagoland) - 267

It's easier than making apple pie, and is better for your body. And, you get to know your neighbors, they have a safe place to exercise, and you help your community - all at the same time. Best of all, your franchise fee for starting a Garage Gym is free.

Here's a great list of the benefits: Companionship, helping each other/support, getting fit, getting active, developing relationships, finding new friends, interacting with your neighbors, convenience, low cost (no membership, no gas, no rent, saves time, motivates you to show up, makes neighborhood safer and more enjoyable, no age requirement and fun, fun, fun.

Does technology or nature most improve the quality of our lives?

Curious if nature provides more relief from low- level stress, researchers at the University of Washington connected participants to heart rate monitors. They wanted to compare the cardiac response to nature with the response from technology.

The scientists had participants look out window at nature, look at same scene on a high-definition plasma screen or look at a blank wall. They then measured their recovery heart rates after each viewing. The results: Those who looked at nature through the window recovered the best. Looking at the television view of nature had no more effect than looking at a blank wall.

If you want to lower your stress, looking at nature great way. And don't be fooled thinking you can replace nature with technology - we can't live without nature. Replacing nature with television shows of nature or technological nature, doesn't replace the experience of nature.

The study detail shows the importance of nature in human lives and at least one limitation of technological nature. Technology is good. It can help our lives. But to thrive, we need to experience nature - sleep under the night sky, experience animals in the wild and feel waves crashing on a beach.

Stoking your metabolism results in increasing your burn rate for fat and calories. And, to accomplish this kick to your metabolism, you first need to measure it. If you want to lose weight or if you want to gain weight then take the two different fitness tests.

Now you could try to estimate your metabolic burn rate, your energy expenditure, but the formulas are so inaccurate they're useless. Rather, increase your rate of calories burned by measuring it; get a training plan measuring again to realize metabolic improvement - improved fitness.

There are many names for the test like VO2 Max, lactate threshold, anaerobic threshold, and metabolic assessments. By taking an exercise fitness test you get the important information on how to increase the total number of calories you burn in a day.

There are two tests - resting and exercise fitness tests. For accurate measurement, the amount of oxygen you breathe in and carbon dioxide you breathe in you out need to be compared. Either test takes about 15-20 minutes and provides a different picture of your metabolism (just think of metabolic as the amount of calories you are burning).

There are six Heart Zones Testing Centers in the USA that can provide you with the test, a printed Metabolic Progress Report, and provide you with your current level of fitness compared with others. And, if you need to accurately know your training zones, there's no better way than to invest in your health and fitness and take an exercise fitness test at one of our centers.

  • If your final moment were like running under the final finish banner of life, what would you like inscribed on the banner?
