Sally's Monthly Tips:
The more that we talk about it, the more that it happens

To make it happen in your life, talk about it, write about it, tell others about it and by doing so you improve the odds that it will happen. Start not by talking about what you want to have happen, let everyone know that you want to start to get healthier, to start a fitness program, that you want them to join you and watch them join you and help you make it happen.

Rugby and Heart Rate
South Africa’s rugby team, the Springboks, now train with a “big brother” watching their every heart beat. Big Brother is a computer that can measure every player's heart rate at the same time (once they strap on their chest monitors). "We've worked out a target heart rate for every player. We want them to train at between 75% and 90% of their maximum heart rate. If the players do not meet their targets, the computer will tell us. If they go above their maximum, their names will appear in red," says the Boks' conditioning coach, Derik Coetzee.

New Monitoring System Displays Heart Rate During Any Workout
By using the novel telemetry system HRT-SYS from the German company ELGO Electric GmbH, it is now possible to monitor the heart rates of up to 12 people simultaneously. Large or small LED displays can be mounted on the wall or on instrument panels, and the data can also be read on a PC or notebook computer.

Accompanying software allows for graphical views and statistical analysis. A mobile stand-alone option is also available. Data transmission is possible over many hundred meters, making the system operational in stadiums, sport fields, and indoor sports arenas.

Today’s American lifestyle is “obesogenic,” a new term describing the effect on our health of all the seemingly endless factors in our environment that tend to make individuals fat.
In fact, as early as 1956, scientist J. Mayer showed the existence of the “Threshold Effect”, a critical level of required physical activity called the “normal activity range.” Only when an individual’s activity level is above this threshold is he or she able to self-regulate weight gain and weight loss. The Heart Zones way of fitness puts you ahead of the game: the Heart Zones system shows you exactly how to stay above the sedentary zone through the use of training tools such as heart rate monitors, power meters, accelerometers, and GPS-DASH monitors. Tools, data, and zones—a powerful combination!

The Bionic Football Helmet: Measuring Heart Rate, Body Temperature, and Force of Impact Football helmets that measure the force with which a player is hit, as well as read vital signs such as body temperature and heart rate, may someday become standard equipment for football players, said Tony Egues, Head Equipment Manager for the Miami Dolphins professional football team, at a recent conference for team physicians and athletic trainers. "Sideline Response System" technology that measures the impact to a player's head has been available for approximately two years, according to Egues, and helmets that measure core body temperature and heart rate are currently being developed and tested in NCAA Division I teams and in several high school teams. "But much more research needs to be done before we will adopt that technology in the NFL," says Egues.

Letter from one of our readers, Sharon Meier, a 2006 Danskin Triathlon Finisher (reprinted with permission)

I have learned so much about myself doing the Heart Zones preparing for the Danskin. After getting over the fact that I am very stressed, and finally getting honest with myself on the Emotional Load Scoreboard, I made some changes in my lifestyle. I can't change my job, but I have altered my diet and have committed to at least 7-8 hours of rest every night. My delta heart rate has gone from 30 to 26. I have lowered my resting heart rate from 66 to 57. Now, I’m in great shape—emotionally, physically, spiritually, AND mentally, and I’m making a habit of recording as much as I can in the training journal.

The less stressed heart,
Sharon

We can’t resist giving you another one of our indoor cycling rides from the new book Heart Zones Cycling.

Ride Overview: Turtle Rock
This ride is named after a mountain in the California Alps near the town of Markleeville. It is near the start and finish of the famed Death Ride. What these two rides have in common is a test of your ability to stay steady, focused and tenacious like a tortoise.
Choose this ride in Block 1 of your training and adjust the intervals for your fitness level. The goal is to spend time in the saddle building your aerobic base. The tempo or cadence is steady along with heart rate which will be between 85% and 90% of your threshold. Choose flat to rolling terrain and ride in a moderately big gear at 70-75 rpm. Warm up for 15 to 20 minutes then choose the steady state work interval that best fits your fitness and training level. Finish with a 15 to 20 minute warm down.
