Sally's Monthly Tips:
When was the Last Time You did something for the First Time?

Your body needs energy. By answering this question you can connect energy with direction and enjoy the thrill of new activities: When was the last time you did something for the first time?
(Note: As a woman who has finished every Danskin Women’s Triathlon over the last 16 years, over 100 swim-bike- run sprint events, and watched over 200,000 women finish one, I recommend that you accept this as a challenge to sign up for the Danskin and train so because you can do it.)

Cindy Miller
Research shows that it is possible to reverse sedentary lifestyle diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. If you are sedentary, lean or non-lean, preventative physical activities are essential for your healthy daily living. Looking for a way to get started?

Join the Walking Well by enrolling in a Heart Zones Basic Training Program, led by National Coach and Master Trainer Cindy Miller. Cindy has the amazing ability to get you started training in the zones and teaching you how to be successful in your training efforts. Before you know it, you’ll be a lifetime member of the Walking Well!

Q: Does a person's maximum heart rate and zones change if one is taking blood pressure medication, namely a beta blocker....or do you still work within the same formula for your Max Heart Rate and various zones?

A: Yes, you need to change your maximum heart rate and reset your zones based on your new maximum heart rate which is regulated by your blood pressure medication. Do not use your old zones or your old maximum because that violates the purpose of taking your medication which is to lower your risk of a cardio incident.

Avid Cyclist cover
by Sally Edwards and Sally Reed
Heart Zones Cycling is the only technology-based training methodology simple enough for “ordinary folks” and yet powerful enough for even the most advanced cyclists. Anchoring the Heart Zones Cycling program on the single physiological marker of heart rate introduces an elegant simplicity to training: with the single value of heart rate serving as an indicator of intensity (degree of exertion), each rider is able to define for himself or herself heart rate ranges or “heart zones.” By distributing training over several of these heart zones, a rider reaps the physiological benefits of low intensity training and high intensity training in the proper amounts at the right time. The result of this variation in training is peak performance during cycling events—riders increase their fitness, go farther and faster on the bike, and achieve their cycling goals.

Special features of Heart Zones Cycling include;
  1. a collection of dynamic, fun, and effective rides specifically designed for riders using the Heart Zones training methodology
  2. informative charts that identify the features of each ride and how the rides fit into a training regimen; and
  3. helpful examples that illustrate each step of the Heart Zones Cycling program
Readers will learn how to;
  • Embrace a holistic approach to training that acknowledges the wide array of factors influencing a rider’s time, energy, and success on the bike.
  • Interpret the “language” of heart rate.
  • Select the right tools: heart rate monitors, GPS- based distance-altitude-speed-and-heart rate monitors, and power meters.
  • Write effective, motivational, achievable goals.
  • Find their anchor heart rate.
  • Set their heart zones.
  • Periodize their training load (vary training intensity and volume over time).
  • Create a personalized training program based on the seven steps of the heart zones training program.
  • Design a training plan.
  • Ride the Heart Zones way, with rides and assessments specifically designed to help riders reach their training objectives according to their periodized training programs.

Cycleops
This one is a beauty! This sleek, grey Italian- designed machine from Saris has a Power Tap power meter and a heart rate monitor, making it the first indoor cycle to sport a dashboard that gives you the data you need to train for strength, power and speed on the bike. We’ve taken it for a couple of test rides and there’s not another indoor bike that can touch it— period. The data is downloadable from the dashboard to your PC, and the flywheel is in the rear rather than the front of the bike so it feels like you are riding your road bike. The CycleOps Pro 300 PT Indoor Cycle retails for $1,899 and they have other versions starting at $1,199. All we can say is, "sweet!"
