1. So, you are down to the wire and race day is almost upon you! Your training has had the typical ups and downs that go with training for an event. Motivation at times has played devils advocate in your head and training time has kept you from enjoying other activities with family and friends. You’ve hung in through over-training issues, perhaps a nagging reoccurring injury and finding enough time in your week to get those training miles in. But despite everything, you anticipate race day with readiness and excitement. Then – an accident happens preventing you from getting to the starting line. Life has a funny way of slowing us down. Yep, its unfair, and you will never understand why. An injury, with time recovers, but what do you do with the disappointment of having worked so hard – in some cases up to a year to train for a specific event? Go back to the drawing board. Write up a recovery/rehab plan, set reasonable goals for yourself, give yourself down time to recover and heal completely and LOOK AHEAD. One thing is for sure: The sun always sets and rises again in the morning – and you never know what the new tide is going to bring in. What kept you looking head? Share your insight and story with Jessica, Red Jersey Master Trainer, who is recovering from a cycling crash that ended her season of racing this year earlier than planned. 2. For those of us with siblings, we have similar stories of the fighting, competition and seemingly unforgiveable incidents played by our brother or sister. Harboring resentments keeps us stuck in the same role and allows for the family dysfunction to continue. I recently met a brother and sister on the Montana AIDS Vaccine ride who are working towards strengthening their relationship. How? They both decided to do a 575 mile charity bike ride together. They lost a childhood neighborhood friend to AIDS and did their ride in memory of him. Having a mission in front of them helped them to focus on what and why they were training instead of getting caught up in their issues of one another. It brought them closer as they exchanged their frustrations with training and fundraising for the event. They learned to support each other with words of encouragement and found that they really did have a lot in common. There are a number of charity events and teams to get involved with and you don’t have to limit yourself to doing the event. All events have crewing and volunteer positions. Get over it – join in with a sibling and share in the joy of doing for someone else!

3. Fall beginnings. Yes, summer is winding down. Kids are getting ready for returning to school and yes, you did notice that stores are starting to bring out holidays items! Most often a season change brings about changes in our training. Training may take us indoors, family commitments may take away training time, or we simply begin to focus on another area of training. Whatever the season of Fall brings, planning for it keeps can keep you motivated and ready for the next season. Take a look at the Heart Zones Training Tree and determine where you are. Then sit down and outline your training goals. Writing your training plan consistent with the time you have and the resources available to you will help keep you on track. It is all about the 10 Steps to Heart Zone Training! Need a little help? Go to http://www.heartzone.com to order one of Sally’s books on Heart Zone Training or take a look at the Fall seminar schedule and join us for a workshop on how to write your own training plan!

4. Event directors want to hear from you! Yes, YOU can make a difference in how an event is run and organized. Whether to congratulate (we all LOVE compliments), or to make a suggestion on how an event can improve is useful information for an event director. Those special little tidbits that you can contribute will make a difference for everyone! Think about the races or events that you have attended and share your ideas. AND don’t just wait to be handed an evaluation form – simply jot down your ideas and comments and send them in!

5. Women’s specific wear: The Outdoor Retailer, a manufactures show, in Salt Lake City took place this past week and one of the biggest niches in the market for everyone is providing specific wear and product for women. Everything for women’s clothing, hiking attire, backpacks, cycling attire, shoes and more! Luna bars move over – diva owned businesses and manufactures are designing more and more product especially designed for women. We all know that being properly fitted for our activities is important and now you can look for women specific equipment. New at the newsstands - Sports Illustrated Women. Check it out!
6. A record 4,000 women were in line at the Danskin Women's Triathlon Series race in Seattle this past weekend, placing it as the largest single-distance race in America this year! The race had been sold out for two months! The Seattle race is the fifth in the seven-race series for 2001. Previous events in Chicago and Denver have sold out as well, with Denver topping out at 2,500 entrants. Since the series began in 1990, 80,000 women have crossed the finish line in Danskin races. If you want to plan for next season – register early at http://www.danskin.com

7. Now in its 20th year, Interbike is North America's largest and most comprehensive trade event for the bicycle industry. More than 1000 suppliers from around the world display to representatives from over 4000 bicycle retail stores and draw over 20,000 annual attendees. Additional events include educational seminars, press conferences, and technical clinics offering valuable information for attending retailers. Prior to expo start, Interbike hosts a one-day, OutDoor Demo™, allowing buyers and attending media to test the latest cycling equipment. Sally Reed, author of the Indoor and Outdoor Cycling book will be at VeloPress for a special book signing session. Stop by and see us! September 30th to October 2, 2001.

8. Recently, a friend of mine traveled down to a race placing her bike in the care of a bike shop to pack up and then with the airlines for shipping. The bike shop forgot to remove the skewer in the front tire and the airlines also mis-handled the box – the result – a damaged frame beyond repair and requiring replacement. Airline insurance may not cover the cost of your bike – however, your homeowners policy can. Call your insurance company and inquire about how to place your bike on your policy to help with potential costs of theft and damage. Well worth it!
