Washington, D.C on the topic of promoting greater physical activity among
older adults. The "Extending Vitality" Conference gave more than 20
organizations and agencies an opportunity to meet with Dr. Richard Carmona,
Surgeon General of the United States to urge him to make promotion of
physical activity for older adults the central focus of his administration.
3. Fat Burning After Exercise: From the email-bag: A question on Fat Burning: I am a beginning triathlete, 52 yrs old. I've completed 3 sprint distance triathlons at a slow place. I am very confused about the fat burning zone. I enjoyed reading Sally's book "The Heart Rate Monitor Guidebook to Heart Zones Training" (aka the green book). According to the book, as you move higher into the five different heart zones, your heart beats faster and you burn less fat while burning more carbohydrates. In the book by Mark Allen and Julie Moss "Workouts for Working People", they argue that once you exceed your aerobic heart rate in a workout the fat burning not only stops but stops for 8 more hours. So you burn carbo's and not fat for the next 8 hours. Finally, the "Precision Heart Rate Training" book by Edmund Burke says just the opposite of Allen and Moss. This is all very confusing. Who's right? I just want to make by body burn more fat efficiently to improve my endurance and keep my weight down. Help, I am confused!" Heart Zones Associate Lorraine Brown provides Dennis with the following answer: "I have completed extensive meta-analysis of hundreds of research articles for the book I am writing with Sally Edwards titled: "Fit AND Fat". It does look like that at some very, very, very high training intensities that the metabolism relies almost entirely on the glucose metabolism, but afterward stopping the activity it appears that there is an increase in not only glucose metabolism but fat metabolism as well. In fact, the harder the exercise session, the more 'post workout' fat burning you get! This is because the body is trying to replace depleted glycogen stores and get back to a position of "full energy tanks". One way it does this is by taking some fat out of storage, and the other way is by grabbing carbohydrates that you eat after exercise and put them straight into your glycogen stores (which is why it is so important to eat after exercise). I really don't think these comments about cessation of fat metabolism after an anaerobic workout are correct. If you have any additional research that proves this to be true, I would be very interested to know. Answers to questions such as these and more will be addressed at the first International Heart Zones Fitness Conference coming up October 4-6 in Seattle. We want you to learn from fitness experts from around the world. Join us by attending a seminar, workshop, certification, or workout by going to www.heartzones.com to sign up. This Conference only happens once a year and this is a rare opportunity to meet world-authorities.

5. Workout: New Target for Eating: You won't want to miss this topic at the Heart Zones International Fitness Conference next week Rosemary Agostini will deliver a keynote luncheon address titled "Does Anyone Know How to Eat for Energy?", The following release is what Rosemary and her husband, George Brooks, have been working on - the development of a new eating standards for the USA and Canada. Yes, the RDA's have changed and the amount of exercise - one hour a day - has also increased. This is important for all of us to know and understand. You can get the full report on the web at http://national-academies.org and you can 'hear all about it!' at our conference October 4-6th in Seattle, Washington when Rosemary presents the new RDA nutritional standards for Canada-USA. Don't miss out!
6. Yes, Survivor! Okay, so IRONMAN is over, completed, done - mission accomplished. During this time known as "post race depression", I find myself tossing around ideas on what is next. You know, with training less, I have more time on my hands and well.., somehow I have settled into spending some of that time with a remote control in my hand! Okay - I'll admit right now! I DO lean towards the television set when blurbs about the "The Amazing Race" and "Survivor" or Outdoor Life's network "Extreme Race" come on. It looks fun, daring and well....possibly another challenge! So then I think, "okay, Jessica, aka Crab Legs, baby steps - you know, break it down to something smaller". Then I think about the "Survivor" party that I hosted for my Heart Zones Performance Camp attendee's last year. It was a blast and included endurance events, goofy events like placing a double headed plunger between two people balanced on their foreheads with a mini hula hoop that they had to swing around and eating gummy worms from a dog bowl! So, what am I getting at? I want to develop a low-cost, Heart Zones Survivor Series that YOU can host with your friends or fitness club. Got any ideas for me? ....Come on, think of some of the obstacle courses or Ropes Challenge courses you have seen or done or wanted to do and email them to me! Be a part of developing a FUN Heart Zones Survivor Series that we can all do! All entries will be eligible for a drawing for a SURVIVOR BUFF too! jessica.menendez@heartzone.com 7.
