1. What Any Good Cycling Instructor Should Know How often have you
heard a participant say, "I'm not supposed to go over 170 bpm, so I guess
that's my max."? or, "I maxed at 184 bpm today!"? Any good
cycling instructor today should know the FACTS about max heart rate and how to
give good, solid cycling instruction when it comes to max heart rate. Instructors
also need to watch our terminology carefully. The following may be
misinterpreted as taking it to maximum heart rate:
* "Give it everything you've got!"
* "Give it 100%"
* "Take it to the max!"
* "Don't hold back!"
Most fitness facilities have
a policy not to take individuals higher than 92% of their maximum heart rate. In
fact, 90% and above is considered redline, an area where the more time spent
yields a higher risk of injury, burnout, and the negative effects of
over-training. Only individuals seeking higher athletic performance should
consider going above 90%, and then, only for specified periods of time followed
by appropriate periods of recovery. A little bit of knowledge can go a long way
towards educating each other and our membership. If you would like further
information about
Heart Zones Cycling, please
feel free to contact President, Kathy Kent at mkent11@aol.com

Eliminate
Holiday Stress Forever!
Holiday
stress is already upon us...gifts, decorations, holiday cards, parties, food,
alcohol, family get togethers, financial worries, job worries...and that's on
top of our already stressful family, work and social lives. So you're thinking
to yourself, "I just don't have time to work out today! I've got too much
to do!" Make the time...please! Just 20 or 30 minutes a day can release
enough endorphins to eliminate stress from your day. Take the dog for a brisk
walk. You'll both feel
better. If you have longer, take a relaxing Yoga class. Ever wear your heart
rate monitor to a yoga class? Try it and challenge yourself to see just how low
you can go! Give yourself the gift of a stress-free holiday season. Contact Dan
Rudd, Heart Zones' guru on taking care of your Emotional Heart at drudd2045@aol.com
for more information.

Choosing
a heart monitor:
'Tis
the season and perhaps you are
considering a heart monitor
for yourself or someone else. But what features and options should you consider
when buying a monitor? First, consider what sport(s) you participate in. A
monitor that has 2 or 3 zone settings might be easier to manage instead of
setting exercise target zones for each sport each time. Next consider exactly
what information you want to capture. Total exercise time with your time in
zone is important for any training session. Other features such as your average
heart rate during your exercise session or knowing the peak heart rate reached
during your exercise
session can also be helpful.
A general rule of thumb for choosing a heart monitor is that in time you will
outgrow the basic functions of a monitor and will want to capture more
information as you learn more about heart zone training! For more information
on monitors, visit: http:www.heartmonitors.com/shop/sally_edwards.htm
