There are many different types, methods, and timing of student assessments in Physical Education. All of these physical evaluations rely on the ability for the instructor or better yet, the student, to measure physical activity results. Of course, as humans, sometimes mistakes, misinterpretations, and technical difficulties can happen. Unfortunately, these errors can significantly impact the validity and reliability of your program’s fitness and health assessments. Awareness of these common mistakes in PE can help both teachers and students improve the accuracy and effectiveness of their assessment practices.
Here are 11 common mistakes when executing health and PE (HPE) assessments:
Mistake #1: Avoid ranking your students.
Solution: Measure your students’ individual improvement over time as these trends are valuable that can motivate the student as they learn the joy of getting better.
Mistake #2: Overemphasis on comparisons.
Solution: Use norm-referenced assessment by not focusing too much on comparing students rather than individual progress.
Mistake #3: Using assessments from bygone days (i.e. the Fitnessgram, first developed 42 years ago)
Solution: Avoid outdates norms or assessments.
Mistake #4: Avoid measuring EVERYTHING.
Solution: Use KPI (or key performance indicators) for each specific activity as well as allowing student-choice of which assessments they prefer for improved outcomes.
Mistake #5: Lack of student motivation.
Solution: Incorporate activities that build on student’s interest. Accommodate all students by using different levels or variations of the same activity.
Mistake #6: Misunderstanding test protocols.
Solution: Use visual aids and practice demonstrations. Simplify instructions and ask for feedback.
Mistake #7: Failure to account for individual differences.
Solution: Incorporate technology, such as fitness trackers or apps, to monitor individual progress and provide personalized feedback.
Mistake #8: Inadequate explanation of test purpose.
Solution: Relate to real-life benefits, connect to learning objectives, provide context and seek feedback.
Mistake #9: Neglecting privacy concerns.
Solution: Use trusted platforms. Limit data collection, secure data handling and educate students on data privacy.
Mistake #10: Failing to track longitudinal data.
Solution: Maintain records over time to monitor individual progress.
Mistake #11: Overlooking safety precautions.
Solution: Not properly screening students for health issues before high-intensity tests using as an example “Seven Healthy Heart Assessments” for screening heart health.
