During the pandemic, Timberland High School needed a way to reach their hybrid and asynchronous students. The online ePE program offered by Heart Zones allowed students to use the sensors at home while allowing their teacher, Coach Ami Schulte, to see their progress. Students were able to understand their intensity levels better by using the zones training to complete assignments. Ami has continued to use them in class for a variety of activities. Watch and learn how Ami is doing this in the video below!
What trends do you see in Physical Education, especially when it comes to educational technology?
Incorporating educational technology into PE allows lessons to be more student centered and driven. The data also allows students to be accountable for their fitness during class.
What do you like most about using Heart Zones?
“Students get instant feedback and it motivates students to move. Students can make connections with the lessons taught and what their body is doing,” Ami explains.
What do you wish other PE teachers understood or knew about Heart Zones?
Ami would tell you, “Don’t be intimidated by the technology. It really is quick and easy to use in the classroom. After the first day of teaching students how to use the monitors it is a smooth process.”
Currently Timberland High School uses Heart Zones for SEL lessons in yoga. Students are able to see instant feedback on how their heart rate changes during the breathing and relaxation activities. In the online courses, students use the Heart Zones Move app to record physical activity and analyze their results. Students have goals for reaching and staying in their correct zone for the activity. Students have also been able to check out step trackers and Heart Zones' sensors to complete make-up lessons before or after school.
Friends and coworkers would describe Ami as positive, upbeat, and motivated. In the year 2020 & 2021, Ami earned the title, PE teacher of the year, by MOSHAPE and it was at the 2020 Missouri SHAPE conference that Ami met Sandy Moore, Heart Zones regional manager, who introduced her to Heart Zones. Over her twenty-one year teaching career, Ami has now been using Heart Zones for the last five and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon!
